Project Vision & Scope

This capstone project strategically overhauls Methodist University Ghana's (MUG) network infrastructure.

Our vision is to establish a high-performance, secure, and scalable digital environment that effectively supports MUG's academic and administrative excellence.

The scope involved a comprehensive analysis of the existing network, guided by the OSI model, leading to the design and proposed implementation of a robust hierarchical architecture.

The challenges we encountered and our layered solutions are outlined in the subsequent sections.

Navigating MUG's Network Hurdles

Suboptimal Wireless

Incorrect AP placement and environmental blocks leading to poor Wi-Fi coverage.

Security Gaps

Open wireless policies creating vulnerabilities and unauthorized access risks.

Flat Architecture

Single broadcast domain causing excessive ARP traffic, congestion, and instability.

IP Inefficiency

Oversized /19 subnet contributing to unnecessary broadcast and poor management.

The Implemented Hierarchical Solution

Proposed Hierarchical Network Architecture
  • Optimized AP Layout: Strategic placement for optimal signal and coverage.
  • VLAN Segmentation: Isolating traffic into Admin, Students, Servers, etc., reducing broadcast.
  • IP Redesign & OSPF: Efficient IP use, dynamic routing between VLANs.
  • RADIUS for AAA: Centralized authentication using FreeRADIUS & daloRADIUS.
  • Enhanced Security: SSL for RADIUS portal, groundwork for WPA3.
